Mr. Joy was a Civil War vet who, according to the Portrait & Biographical Album of Sangamon County Illinois, 1891, served in Company I, 73d Ill Infantry and was captured at Chickamauga, September 20, 1863, and was a prisoner till the end of the war, in five different rebel prisons.
According to the Historical Encyclopedia of Morgan County, Illinois, 1906, Mr. Joy served over 18 months in various prisons, including Andersonville. Reports of his death reached home after the War, but a short time before the scheduled service, news reached that he was alive. He was furloughed at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO to home in Loami. After the war he taught school in country districts and clerked in a store, but after his marriage to Amanda Hall, bought a farm and worked it till 1881, after her death, when he moved to Waverly. There he was a carpenter and eventually undertaker. Mr. Joy was postmaster of Waverly, August 12, 1898, and was reappointed by President Roosevelt in 1903.
He was a prominent Republican, who was active in politics. He served on the Waverly School Board and two years on the city council.
