Individual Note:
     According to Lucy Miller Dodd's notes, Benjamin T. Bingham died at the age of 75. According to Mary Hodge, Col. Bingham was a slave owner, who had served in the Revolutionary War, under General Nathaniel Greene.

Individual Note:
     Sarajane Zorn writes that William S. had the distinction of serving in two wars. When 16 years of age, he enlisted at Jacksonville, IL in Co. G, 16th US Infantry for five years to serve in the war with Mexico. The date of his enlistment was July 16, 1847. As peace was concluded the next year, he was mustered out at Cincinnati, OH in August, 1848. He enlisted, June 17, 1864, in Co. F, 28th IL Infantry, and was mustered out August 2, 1865. He was appointed hospital steward, in which place he served the greater part of his term.
The marriage record of July 1869 for m. of Lawrence T. Underwood and Martha J. Weir lists the J.P. as W. S. Colburn.

Individual Note:
     According to the "Early Settlers of Sangamon County," William's father died in Germany and his mother emigrated to VA, where she married a man named Sawyer, had 2 children and he died. She then married Henry Brown and moved from St. Clair County, IL to Sangamon County around 1819, with William and a sister Lucinda.
They settled on the north side of Lick Creek and were among the earliest settlers. William was known for his strength and endurance; it was attested he cut 700 rails in one day.
